NEW YORK (AP) — New York City’s famous Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster was closed indefinitely this week after it stopped mid-ride.

The 97-year-old wooden roller coaster at Luna Park was on the ramp Thursday when operators took it out of service because of a damaged sprocket in the machine room. The operator stopped the ride and several people were rescued from the roller coaster unharmed, according to the New York City Department of Buildings.

A video posted on social media shows a person being carefully escorted along the tracks.

Building Department inspectors were on site Friday and issued violations to Luna Park’s owners for the damaged equipment and failure to promptly notify the department of the incident.

A post on Luna Park’s website said Sunday that Cyclone would reopen once repairs were completed and the attraction passed inspection.

“At Luna Park at Coney Island, safety is our top priority. Ride maintenance and thorough testing is conducted daily prior to Luna Park’s opening and throughout the day as needed,” the statement said. “The Coney Island Cyclone is a 97-year-old roller coaster that is meticulously maintained and tested daily.”
