Historic roller coaster Cyclone in Coney Island, NY, comes to a standstill

Aug. 25 (UPI) – A mechanical malfunction has shut down the famous Cyclone roller coaster in Brooklyn, New York, indefinitely, officials said.

The Cyclone, one of the main attractions at Luna Park, was in mid-ride with people on board when it was shut down on Thursday. It will remain stopped while crews figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.

Investigators said the malfunction was caused by a broken chain, and one of the cars remained stuck in place Friday. Several people were safely rescued from the nearly century-old wooden roller coaster; no injuries were reported.

Investigators said the attraction will remain closed until repairs are made. No timetable was given.

The amusement park was issued two violations as a result of the incident, one for inadequate maintenance of the attraction and the other for failure to report the incident to the state.

The Cyclone, which opened on June 26, 1927, has a top speed of 60 miles per hour and a total track length of 2,640 feet with a maximum height of 85 feet. Each set of cars can carry 24 passengers.

On Sunday, Clark Ivers and Yasmine Larasati told AMNY they had hoped to be able to go on the ride, but were glad they weren’t there when the ride was canceled.

“I’m kind of relieved that didn’t happen to me,” Ivers said. “She’s an adrenaline junkie, but I’m not, and this has been on her to-do list for some time.”
