Local Notes: Volunteers needed, creative writing, Family Resource Center news and more – Your Community

Grief

Sadly, on Wednesday 24th July, Mr Tony Freeman of Alta, Norway, last resident of The Square, St John’s Park, formerly of Poleberry and Dunmore East, Waterford, passed away. He is predeceased by his beloved parents Peter and Nancy, his sisters Eve Marie and Cora Sue and his brother Paul. He leaves behind his beloved son Cillian, his sisters Kay (Carberry) and Lorraine (Freeman), his brother Robin, Cillian’s sister Aisling and their children Liam, Euan and Croía, his brothers-in-law Michael and Francis, his sisters-in-law Maureen and Mary, his aunts Stella and Maura, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends. Tony will be sadly missed by all his family, relatives, neighbours and friends. Memorial Mass for Tony was held on Saturday 24th August at 6.30pm at Sacred Heart Church, The Folly. Our sincere condolences go out to Tony’s family, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

Baptism ceremony

SERFSN

The South East Regional Family Support Network bereavement group provides a safe place for family members who have experienced the death of a loved one due to substance abuse or related issues. The group is led by two trained psychotherapists and offers respite and other opportunities that may be relevant. This is a free service specifically for the South East Regional Family Support Network and runs on Tuesdays from 10:30am to 12:00pm at the Millennium Building, Church Road, Lisduggan, Waterford (X91 FN5V). Train timetable

Chair Yoga

Chair Yoga Chair Yoga takes place from Monday 23rd September from 10am-10.45am at the Butler Community Centre, Room 5, St John’s Park, Waterford (X91 FEP4). The cost is €8 so come along and move with confidence, improve your flexibility, mobility, balance and coordination. Classes are led by an experienced yoga and pilates teacher. Whist Club

A Whist club meets on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in the Butler Community Centre. They would love to see all their old players and new players are also very welcome. Participation costs €5 per person.

Coffee in the morning

Solas Run and March for Life

The Solas Cancer Support Centre Run and Walk for Life returns to the streets of Waterford City on Sunday 13th October and Dungarvan’s Greenway on Saturday 12th October. The Dungarvan 10k Run and Walk will start at 10am in Walton Park on Saturday 12th October. The Waterford City 10k Run and Walk on Sunday 13th will start at 10am on the Quay. A new 4k family walk has been created in both Waterford and Dungarvan to encourage families to take part in parallel to the 10k walks. The popular virtual option will also be available and workplaces are again encouraged to #GoOrangeForSolas. Registration is open online at www.solascentre.ie. The registration fee is €25 per adult and €15 per child. This fee includes a t-shirt and event medal, kindly sponsored by Eirgen Pharma.

Parents Plus Program

Sacred Heart Family Resource Centre is running a free Parents Plus program for parents of children aged 0-7 in October. The program starts on October 2nd and runs once a week from 10am-12.30pm. If you want to reduce your stress as a parent and build your child’s confidence, ability to learn and positive behavior, then why not join this program? To register now, call Anne on 051 306728.

Parent Support Program

Sacred Heart Family Resource Centre Waterford is offering a free support programme for parents of children suffering from anxiety on Friday 13th September. The programme will now run once a week from 9.30am to 11.30am. The programme will be led by an art therapist in a confidential setting. For more information or to register please contact Elaine on 051 306728. Participants must be willing to commit to the 10 weeks of the programme.

Creative Writing

Sacred Heart Family Resource Centre Waterford would love for you to join us on our 10 week creative writing programme starting on Thursday 12th September. Sessions will be from 11am-1pm. The programme is free to attend and is funded by WWETB Adult & Community Education and led by Derek Flynn. For more information contact Elaine on 051 306728. Volunteers wanted

Volunteers are needed for the Slice of Culture Festival, which is bigger than ever this year. This fantastic event is a true celebration of the rich diversity and vibrant cultures that make our community unique and will take place on Saturday 7th September from 11am-7pm at Wyse Park in Waterford City. It will be a multicultural event and aims to promote the community spirit that exists locally. Help us bring this incredible event to life and have a rewarding experience whilst engaging with people from all walks of life. Your support will help us make this a memorable celebration for all.
