Calling on Miami artists to create a tribute to Cielito Lindo | Miami

Built in 1928, the neoclassical building that now houses the Miami-Dade County Courthouse is also known as “Cielito Lindo” (beautiful sky), in reference to the view inmates enjoyed from the jail that once sat above the building.

Now the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs is calling on artists

for local, national and international artists at all stages of their career for the Homage to Cielito Lindo project.

With a budget of $30,000, one artist will create an original work of art that evokes and responds to the design features, architecture, history, aesthetics, community affiliations and historical narratives of the Miami-Dade County Courthouse, commonly known as Cielito Lindo.

The artwork will be displayed in the ceremonial courtroom on the 13th floor of the new Civil and Probate Court and will be mounted on a wall approximately 30 feet wide and 10 feet high.

The selected artwork is conceived as a site-specific installation and/or mixed media collage that draws inspiration from historical context, community narratives and important events that have occurred in and around the historic site since the 1920s.

The selected artists must be available to participate in the design process and complete and install the artwork on site by January 30, 2025.
