Outages, shelters and closures on Big Island during Hone

HONOLULU (KHON2) – As Tropical Storm Hone approaches, numerous closures are in place on the Big Island and emergency shelters have been opened across the island.

Closures

Due to high waves, beach parks from Laupahoehoe to Whittington and Kaʻū were closed.

Bus routes have also been cancelled, said Mayor Roth.

Shelters

Some shelters open at 2 p.m. and are staffed by the Red Cross. Those going to the shelters must bring their own bedding, food, water and medicine, phones, chargers and other necessities.

Power outages

HECO announced a power outage affecting nearly 3,000 customers on the Big Island on social media around 1 p.m. The company confirmed that the outages were not part of the PSPS program.

Power was restored at Hawaiian Paradise Park and Orchidland around 3 p.m., but power was still out in Kapoho and Nanawale as of 4:30 p.m.

According to HECO, power was restored to Kohala Estates, Kahua Seaview and Kawaihae Hawaiian Homes around 5:10 p.m.
