Will more injured Palestinians come here for treatment? Prime Minister Anwar says it is too early to say

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 – Malaysia will consider providing additional assistance to injured Palestinians if needed, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

However, he said there were no discussions yet about the next phase of assistance to the injured Palestinians.

“So far, there is no development regarding the next phase. The first phase focused on medical care (injured Palestinians are being brought to Malaysia), and the Palestinians who have recovered are being repatriated. We are taking a calm and measured approach for now.

“Later, we will negotiate with Egypt (which has hosted Palestinians), as well as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar. We will assess whether further talks are necessary. For now, our priority is to first ensure that people are treated and get well. It is too early to make any further decisions.

He told reporters this after chairing the Malaysia Mosque for Al-Aqsa and Palestine (MM4AP) conference to mark International Mosque Day 2024 at the Federal Territory Mosque of Kuala Lumpur this morning.

On August 15, Malaysia transported 41 injured Palestinians, including an eight-month-old baby, to a military hospital in Kuala Lumpur for further treatment. This humanitarian mission, carried out by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), flew the patients from Cairo to Kuala Lumpur.

Also attending the conference held today were Minister for Religious Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar and his deputy Dr Zulkifli Hasan, as well as MM4AP Co-Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Awang.

The conference was also attended by about 1,000 representatives of mosques and NGOs, foreign envoys, academics and observers from several countries. The event was organised by the Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations of Malaysia (MAPIM) in collaboration with the Alliance of World Masjid in Defence of Al Aqsa and the Asian Ulama Council Secretariat. — Bernama
