The final preseason game isn’t what it used to be. As cliche as it sounds, it’s a big deal for everyone. The reality is that nearly 1,200 players won’t be on the final rosters. A good portion are returning to the practice squad, but it’s only a little over half, assuming they don’t get any new players who weren’t in training camp. As for the Saints, we should all be excited to see how Sunday’s game against the Titans plays out. Here are some things everyone should know before Sunday’s 1 p.m. CT kickoff.

Who will do the backup job?
We expect Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler to see frequent action, as Derek Carr and many other regulars are not expected to play. For now, Haener still leads the way, but Rattler is not far behind. For training camp, I expect Haener to hit 109/165 (66%) in team drills, while Rattler hits 91/149 (61%). Both had their moments in the preseason, but Haener has a fluke, so to speak. We’ll see if the rookie can make one last impression on everyone in front of the Superdome crowd.
Who will secure key positions that are not yet filled?
By my count and understanding, there are five starting positions up for grabs right now. They are left guard, right tackle, strong safety, kicker, and punter. I fully expect Trevor Penning to be the Saints’ right tackle this season, while Lucas Patrick would get my vote at left guard. However, nothing is set in stone right now. As for strong safety, I’d give it to Johnathan Abram right now, but it could be a rotation with Jordan Howden and Will Harris.
At kicker, Blake Grupe could have gotten the job with his performance in the Superdome. Charlie Smyth should get a chance, though, and it’s honestly too close to predict. At punter, I put Matt Hayball on the final roster, but that assumes the Saints want to make a change. It would make sense to stick with what Lou Hedley has, but Dennis Allen said it’s not just about the kickers, it’s about the combination of OTAs, minicamp and training camp.
Where will Klint Kubiak finish in the regular season?
Dennis Allen said Friday he wants to evaluate offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and see how things work with him on the field. He has been in the locker room the last two games and will be on the bench this game. Allen said the team has to do what’s best for the players, see how Kubiak likes it and what his preferences are based on how comfortable he is. Ultimately, it’s Allen’s decision.
This is not an exhaustive list, but I see these Saints players as having a good chance of making the practice squad and are worth keeping an eye on. Remember, there are only 16 spots and 6 of them could be veterans. There are many teams that could try to sign these players and New Orleans will obviously be in the same boat. I am not counting players who are currently injured and are not expected to play.
