However, there were also some polarizing moments on the show. First off, the good old debate about whether or not they were taking a break. (Yes, they were, but what Ross did was still inappropriate.) One such moment from the show that hasn’t aged well is Courteney Cox’s fat Monica.

In the flashback episodes of FRIENDS, We get a glimpse of Courteney Cox’s Monica before her transformation. She was overweight for years and was constantly the target of Chandler’s insensitive comments.
In the past, Monica had a crush on her brother’s best friend, but when she hears Matthew Perry’s Chandler making fun of her, she decides to turn her life around and turn down the delicious cakes her mother offered her. As if a switch had been flipped, Monica loses a ton of weight in revenge.
Fat Monica had been the focus of many jokes, including Ross, played by David Schwimmer, who said: “I grew up with Monica. If you didn’t eat fast, you didn’t eat anything!“Although this was all perceived as fun and light-hearted humor, the show’s newer audience is not as tolerant of the fat jokes as the old ones.
On Reddit, a user left a post in the subreddit r/friends_tv_show, and explained that Monica wasn’t as fat back then as people said.

However, there seems to be a difference of opinion among fans, as the old generation of FRIENDS Fans support the show’s decisions, while many of the new generations do not.
Fat Monica causes debate in the fan community
After the OP wrote his post, his replies were full of passionate fans who openly expressed their own opinions. One fan explained that Monica is not fat, but “Oversize” and all that mattered was that the character was happy in her body, whether she was thin or overweight.
On the other hand, some fans weren’t too kind with their words and cited examples from the show to prove the OP wrong. Remember when Ross came out to Monica to her parents and said: “The porch swing wasn’t destroyed by Hurricane Gloria, it was destroyed by Monica!” The joke was made even more funny when her parents revealed that they had already thought of it themselves.
Fans also pointed out that Monica had to have her band uniform specially made to fit her.

Monica is one of the best characters in the series. Everything from her passion for her career to her relationship with Chandler was perfectly portrayed. No matter what opinions you have about fat Monica, one thing is for sure – we all love Monica in all shapes and sizes! Yes, even when she has a hidden room to hoard things.
