On Saturday afternoon, officials announced that they had arrested one person and that they were investigating whether there was a connection to the attack.

In addition, searches were underway at various locations, it was said. “The investigations and search for possible additional perpetrators and causes of the crime are in full swing.”

The police had previously issued a warning and urged the public to remain vigilant, although well-wishers had already begun laying flowers at the scene of the accident.

DJ and music producer Topic, who performed at the festival, said he was on stage and asked to continue the performance “to avoid mass panic” when the incident occurred.

Silent mourning lies over the western German city of Solingen. A few meters from the place where three festival-goers were stabbed to death, residents lay candles in their memory.

The small memorial on a rainbow flag grows larger as the day goes on. I watch as a woman wipes a tear from her cheek, deeply moved by the devastation that has rocked her home.

“Last night it broke our hearts,” says Solingen’s mayor Tim Kurzbach. “We Solingen residents are filled with horror and sadness. What happened in our city yesterday is making it hard for us to sleep.”

On the streets, police officers can be seen in small groups, some guarding the cordon, others talking to people to gather information about the attacker who was responsible for all the suffering.

Festival organizer Philip Müller was on the second stage when he got a call that a man was stabbing people in the crowd. When he arrived at the central square a few moments later, all he could see were dead people, injured people and rescue workers trying to help them.

“When I arrived at the front, there were no people left,” he says. “They were gone: shocked. There was a kind of panic… some huddled under the tables.” He adds: “Nobody can destroy this city. We have 160,000 people… Let’s stay together in freedom and peace.”

Solingen has about 160,000 inhabitants and is located near the larger city of Düsseldorf and GermanyBorder with the Netherlands.

Police believe the stabbings were carried out by a lone perpetrator. Information about the identity of the victims has not yet been released.

The region’s top security official, Herbert Reul, who visited the scene in the early hours of Saturday, told reporters it was a targeted attack on human life but declined to speculate on the motive.

The festival of diversity to mark the city’s 650th anniversary began on Friday and was scheduled to continue over the weekend. Attractions such as live music, cabaret and acrobatics were to be offered on several stages in central streets. The festival has now been cancelled.
