Jim Vincent has written three books in the past, focusing on stories with personal connections to his own grandchildren, and has just published a fourth, The Awesome Pet Giraffe.
Vincent said he prefers to focus on more realistic stories in his books because he feels that many children’s books these days have a fantasy element and he prefers to focus on real people and characters.
“The Amazing Pet Giraffe” is the story of a little girl who falls in love with a giraffe at the zoo and the reactions of the people in her life when she tells them about her dream of owning one of her own.
“I’ve written three other books before this one and I thought it would be good to include my three other grandchildren and feature the three grandchildren from the first books in cameos,” Vincent said. “It’s a legacy. I felt inspired by the story that actually happened to one of my granddaughters a long time ago, but I made a few changes. I think it will resonate with children.”
Vincent believed that people would like the book because it is humorous and “has its own charm.” He added that the story also has an important moral based on the circumstances and plot of the book. It’s a message that he believes would resonate with children, and fans have expressed this as well.

“I worked really hard on it and I want people to be able to share it with their kids,” Vincent said. “Not only is it entertaining, but I think it will mean something to them. The moral is to appreciate what you have and be happy about your blessings. I think that’s important for kids to learn that.”
Vincent said he wouldn’t say in the future that he wouldn’t write another book, as he never originally planned to write a fourth. If he gets inspired or has a good idea, a fifth book could be in the pipeline.
Vincent, a retired art teacher from Falconer, also illustrated the book.
The Awesome Pet Giraffe is now available at your local bookstore, Good Neighbor Bookstore, and online at retailers such as Amazon and Barnes And Noble.
“Give the book a chance,” Vincent said. “I think the kids will like it and you’ll get a few laughs out of it.”
