Mesa resident celebrates his 100th birthday with a party on September 4

Dorothy Hannisian, a resident of Broadway Mesa Village, celebrates her 100th birthday on Wednesday, September 4, and the community is hosting a big birthday party that day.

It will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the church dining room at 7231 E. Broadway Road.

She was born in the town of Lake Placid, New York, and has lived in Broadway Mesa Village since 2017, according to a press release.

Her first job was as a telephone operator on D-Day. After traveling to Arizona, she found her calling as an activities director at a resort near the Superstition Mountains.

“Dorothy is a woman of endless curiosity and flair. She started belly dancing at age 65 and hasn’t stopped since. At the community talent show at age 98, Dorothy impressed everyone, proving that age is just a number. She also loves Rummikub and often enjoys lively games with her best friend Dorothy Freye,” the press release said.

Hannisian has two sons. She attributes her longevity to being a night owl who likes to stay up late and takes life with a pinch of salt. She is always on top of things and uses her computer regularly to stay connected and informed, the press release said.

“Dorothy is incredible,” said Brooke Rogers, executive director of Broadway Mesa Village, in the press release. “Her enthusiasm for life, willingness to embrace new experiences and commitment to her community are inspiring, to say the least. We are honored to celebrate this milestone with her.”
