Kamala Harris launches Twitch channel with DNC speech stream

As Vice President Kamala Harris officially accepted the Democratic nomination for President, she unveiled another part of her social outreach strategy. Harris’ speech was broadcast on her Twitching Account that she opened before her speech on Thursday evening in Democratic National Convention.

According to Streams Charts, Harris’ Twitch account had about 1,000 concurrent viewers during her DNC address. The Aug. 22 broadcast was the first public content on the Harris-affiliated hub, which currently has nearly 7,000 followers.

In comparison, Harris’ political rival has a much larger following on the Amazon-owned platform. Since his Twitch account was unblocked a month ago, Donald Trump has increased the number of his followers to over 172,000.

There are several possibilities for the Vice President’s Twitch account in the future. In the simplest sense, her streams are part of a wide-ranging distribution strategy that includes both vertical and horizontal streams on major platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.

Immediately following Harris’ appearance at the DNC, her Twitch account is similar to the other on-demand accounts associated with her presidential bid. The clips available on the account include one of her campaign ads and a clip from her DNC speech accepting the Democratic nomination.

But when it comes to Twitch, Harris could benefit from following her opponent’s lead. Trump has appealed to the creator community by hanging out with streamers like Adin Ross and Logan Paul.

Harris, whose party has accredited hundreds of influencers to the DNC, can use her Twitch account to host collaborations with these young, compelling voices. She could even use Twitch’s new Knock feature to initiate some of these team-ups, though that might come across as a bit “with kids”-ish.

The Harris team may have already begun pursuing some of these partnerships. Kai Cenat claimed on stream that he had declined calls from Harris’ campaign team, but the validity of that claim was later questioned.

If the Vice President would rather team up with someone on Twitch who is less unpredictable than Cenat, she could consider working with a creator like HasanAbiwho has experience streaming alongside liberal politicians. Connecting with conscientious, motivated influencers would give Harris a connection to Gen Z voters who are having conversations about issues like Gaza and the U.S. TikTok divestment bill.

Harris doesn’t seem to be much of a video gamer, but her activity on Twitch could become her next big internet meme. We’ve already brat Summer – maybe it’s time for Stand out fall.
