Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have just filed for divorce and are now faced with the delicate task of promoting their film “Unstoppable” together.
Sources told People on Aug. 23 that Lopez, 55, who plays a supporting role in the film, will attend the premiere of Unstoppable at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, while Affleck, 52, who produced the film, will miss the red carpet.
Affleck’s longtime best friend, 53-year-old Matt Damon, who also produced, will accompany her.
The sports drama was produced by Artists Equity – the company co-founded by Affleck and Damon – and also stars Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena and Don Cheadle.
“Unstoppable” is based on a true story and follows Anthony Robles (Jermoe), a wrestler who was born with one leg. Lopez plays his mother.
The Post has reached out to representatives for Affleck, Lopez and Damon for comment.
In March 2023, Affleck spoke to CBS Sunday Mornings about working with his then-wife on the film.
“What fun, what joy to do things with her,” he said, “to see how great she is, to go to work with his wife, to go to work with his best friend.”
Affleck continued, “If you’re not happy with the people you’re working with and you’re having difficulties or problems at work, I think that’s one of the things that can really cause depression and anxiety and pain in people… I can’t make it seem like she’s doing me a favor, but she’s actually doing that.”
After months of rumors that Lopez and Affleck were splitting up, Lopez officially filed for divorce from Affleck on August 20, the two-year anniversary of the couple’s wedding in Georgia.
The “Jenny From the Block” singer cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for her separation from Affleck after two years of marriage.
According to the Daily Mail, this decision was intentional.
“Jennifer said she was tired of being humiliated by Ben and she waited until the two-year anniversary because she wanted it to hurt,” an insider claimed to the publication.
“But it didn’t hurt him,” the insider claimed. “He’s been done for a long time and deep down she knows it. He let her do it so she wouldn’t look like the bad guy.”
Another source told Us Weekly, “The timing of the divorce was a big f–k-you for Ben.”
Lopez stated that their separation date was April 26, 2024, meaning the two had not been a couple for nearly four months.
Although neither J.Lo nor Affleck spoke about it publicly, it wasn’t such a big secret.
Affleck accompanied Lopez on the red carpet at “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story” in Los Angeles on February 13, but he did not accompany her to the Met Gala in May.
That same month, the hosts of “The View” even discussed the couple’s then-rumored separation.
“When you shout your love from the rooftops, it gets difficult when things aren’t going well. My advice is to keep your mouth shut,” Joy Behar said.
According to TMZ, the estranged couple did not have a prenuptial agreement.
Affleck recently moved out of their $60 million mansion and bought a house for $20.5 million. The property they bought together is currently for sale.
The couple first got together in 2002, but their first engagement ended in 2004.
They married and had children with others. Affleck has children Violet (18), Seraphina (15) and Samuel (12) with his first ex-wife Jennifer Garner (52), from whom he separated in 2015 after 10 years of marriage. Lopez is the mother of 16-year-old twins Emme and Max with her ex-husband Marc Anthony.
Two decades later, Affleck and Lopez rekindled their romance and tied the knot at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas in July 2022. A second and even more extravagant wedding ceremony took place on August 20, 2022, at Affleck’s home in Riceboro, Georgia.
In Lopez’s Prime Video documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” (now streaming), Affleck said he had one demand when they rekindled their relationship.
“When we got back together, I said, ‘Listen, a social media relationship is one of the things I don’t want,'” he said in the film.
But at that time he gave in.
“Then I realized that’s not a fair question. It’s like marrying a ship captain and saying, ‘I don’t like the water.'”
On screen, he added: “We’re just two people with… different approaches trying to compromise.”
