CHICAGO, IL (ANI) – Vice President Kamala Harris spoke about her personal story and promised a “new way forward” at the Democratic National Convention on August 22 as she addressed voters after one of the most extraordinary turning points in U.S. political history.
Harris began her speech by telling her life story: She grew up in California with a single mother, Shyamala Gopalan, who immigrated to the United States from India at the age of 19.
“The path that has brought me here in the last few weeks was undoubtedly unexpected,” she said. “But unusual journeys are nothing new to me,” she added.
She recalled moving often as a child, eventually settling in the San Francisco area where she was raised by a community of caregivers. Harris shared with the audience what she learned from her mother.
Harris attacked Republican candidate Donald Trump, calling him a “frivolous man” and urging Americans to consider the “extremely serious” consequences of his return to the White House.
“Think of the power he will have, especially after the Supreme Court of the United States just ruled that he is immune from prosecution,” she said. “Imagine Donald Trump without guardrails and how he would use the immense powers of the President of the United States, not to improve your life, not to strengthen our national security, but to serve the only client he has ever had – himself,” Harris said.
“On behalf of all whose history could only be written in the greatest nation on earth, I accept your nomination for President of the United States of America,” Harris said at the DNC convention.

She described the upcoming election as “the most important in the life of our nation.”

Harris also promised to reintroduce and sign the bipartisan border security bill, which Trump had openly blocked by calling Republican lawmakers and telling them it would hurt his electoral chances if the immigration issue was seen as resolved. Anger among Democrats was palpable at the convention as Trump continues to attack immigration as their failed issue.
Harris also criticized Donald Trump on the issue of reproductive rights, saying she would sign the bill if elected president. “We trust women, and if Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, I will proudly sign it as President of the United States,” she said.
