The program provides student loan repayment for individuals who care for livestock and who operate or plan to operate in certain rural counties with a population of 35,000 or less.
The Georgia Veterinary Education Loan Repayment Program (GVELRP) provides financial relief through student loan repayment to veterinarians who wish to provide veterinary services to livestock in shortage areas of the state. This program is administered by the State Veterinary Education Board with support from the Georgia Student Finance Authority (GSFA). The Board also receives administrative support from the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
The application period for 2025 runs from August 1, 2024 to September 30, 2024.

To be eligible to apply for this program, you must:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident of the country.
- Resident in Georgia.
- Be either a practicing veterinarian or a final year veterinary student.
You will only be considered for an award if you practice or plan to practice in Board-approved rural counties with a population of 35,000 or less. The list of eligible counties is shown on the map below. Prior performance in these areas will not be considered when creating the contract.

- Have three (3) reference forms completed and signed. At least one of these must be from a DVM/VMD and at least one from a current or former employee. (If you do not have an employment history, include a reference from a professor who was directly involved in the completion of your veterinary degree program.)
