Thrissur man accused of writing positive film reviews loses Rs 4.6 million; 4 people arrested

Kaspamangalam: A young man lost Rs 46 lakh in a scam that involved writing positive reviews to boost ratings of movies. The scammers promised huge profits in exchange for writing positive reviews for movies on a platform called Plex Movie.

The victim, a lottery shop owner from Kaypamangalam Beach in Thrissur, initially invested Rs 70,000 because he was promised a higher profit. He initially received Rs 90,000 back, which encouraged him to invest more. On the company’s anniversary, he was asked to write reviews for “golden films” to double his profit. Within 20 days, he invested Rs 46 lakh, only to pay another Rs 8 lakh as “insurance” and transfer charges when he wanted to withdraw his money.

After an investigation, the police arrested Kollam residents Abdul Ayub (25), Shinaj (25) and Aslam (21) and Shameena Shafir (29) from Thiruvananthapuram. Police suspect that these people are middlemen for a larger network. The fraudsters had opened bank accounts in the names of youths and students under the pretext of online stock trading and obtained their bank cards. During the investigation, the police seized 18 bank cards from the suspects. The accused were arrested when they tried to flee from a resort in Thiruvananthapuram.
