KAXE Executive Director Penny Holcomb poses for her graduation photo. We think her hair looks great despite the circumstances!

This is what we heard

Kari Hedlund, music director of KAXE, shared the above photo and said, “Here are my favorite embarrassing hairstyles of my sisters. (Yes, I will throw them under the bus every now and then.) Amy’s up and down bangs! And Jen’s triangle hair is my favorite.”

Liz of Tamarack said she had a Dorothy Hamill haircut but a perm. “Enough said. Best forgotten,” she added.

Volunteer Jim Gallagher said: “There was an unfortunate time in the mid-60s when hair tonics and oils were popular with some sections of the male population. This was before the Summer of Love, before Woodstock and before long hair became fashionable for men. Combine the adverts for Brill cream (‘a little goes a long way’), Vitalis and others, with Year 5 photo day and unsupervised boys and you get some really homely school photographs of young boys who have not quite grown up yet. These photographs will never see the light of day!”

Penny Holcomb, business manager at KAXE, said, “I got a perm my senior year of high school, right before graduation. After a week of heat, sun, sand, river water, and camping, I came back and had graduation photos the same day. Not good.”

Morey wrote from Big Sandy: “My grandpa cut my brother and I’d give him mohawks one summer at the lake. That was in 1958, and after our summer up north, we were allowed to go to school on the first day of school in the fall with those haircuts – so cool! Then my dad would shave them off.”

Finally, we heard the following from listener Brett Short: “My grandpa always told me the difference between a good haircut and a bad one? Two weeks.”
