New Jersey bill would allow EZ-Pass tolls to be written off

A bill stalled in Trenton would allow residents to write off EZ-Pass tolls.

A bill passing under the radar in Trenton would allow New Jersey residents to write off their EZ-Pass tolls. The New Jersey tax bill passed in January and has been quietly on hold in the various power centers of the statehouse in Trenton.

Two Jersey Shore lawmakers – Democratic Sen. Patrick Diegnan of Middlesex and Republican Sen. James Holzapfel of Ocean – drafted the bill. The bill would limit the maximum amount an individual can deduct from their income to $1,000.

The thousand dollar deduction does not apply to federal income, only New Jersey state income. Additionally, it is important to note that only tolls paid through the EZ-Pass system are eligible for the deduction. Tolls paid through other means do not count toward the $1,000 deduction.

Ez-Pass tolls on roads and bridges

If the bill passes, state residents would be able to write off EZ-Pass tolls on roads and bridges. The Garden State Parkway, Turnpike, and roads and bridges to New York City and Philadelphia would all be written off as long as tolls are collected using EZ-Pass.

There are some restrictions included in the bill. For example, if your tolls are already paid by your employer, you cannot write them off through this program and collect them twice. Fines and penalties are also not part of this program. The administration fee is also not part of it.

“This bill is designed to help individuals offset the significant costs associated with commuting, which have been exacerbated by the recent increase in the state’s gasoline tax. By providing toll-paying commuters with a way to offset some of their costs, this bill recognizes that these individuals pay more than their fair share of the burden of maintaining safe, modern, and sufficient roadways in the state.” -BillS520
