After six months, Skull and Bones is released from Ubisoft Connect

Even though Ubisoft loves its proprietary launcher Ubisoft Connect, it is not for everyone. There is a reason why Steam is the first choice. It is clean and generally smooth. Although there were other reasons that Skull and Bones had issues at release, limiting it to the Ubisoft launcher probably didn’t help. Thankfully, the swashbuckling simulation is coming to Steam today, nearly six months after its maiden voyage.

After the original 2018 target was pushed back several times, Ubisoft’s pirate RPG experienced a turbulent time when it debuted in February 2024. When Skull and Bones finally hit the waves, Really wanted to go to Ubisoft Connect to try it out, even though Ubisoft offers free trials to lure in potential villains. Now, nearly half a year later, it’s available on Steam and a lot has changed on the high seas. Not only does the Steam release of Skull and Bones coincide with the launch of Season 3, which brings with it a ton of new content including a new invading Sea Lord, world events and cosmetics, but you also get immediate benefits from the updates from the past few months. It’s a much better experience today than it was at launch and arguably one of the best pirate games available right now.

The much-needed mouse and keyboard updates also certainly help make the Steam release worthwhile. With more streamlined controls like new standard inputs and map navigation, as well as more specialized UI elements, it’s now a much more natural experience with a mouse and keyboard as it makes the jump to the “home” of PC gaming.

To make the Steam release of Skull and Bones even more special, Ubisoft is hosting a free trial event and working on Steam Deck compatibility. Unfortunately, these allegedly is set to release today, but has been delayed to an as-yet-unspecified date, so if you’re not sure whether to jump in or would rather play it from the comfort of your bed on a Steam Deck, hold off. Try one of the best Steam Deck games instead.
