Rollercoaster nightmare: Thrill ride Leviathan at Sea World theme park on Gold Coast gets stuck, dozens trapped on board

Dozens of thrill seekers were safely evacuated from a popular attraction at Sea World theme park on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

On Thursday at 2.30 p.m., passengers were stuck in the wooden roller coaster Leviathan after a sensor has been activated. The drivers were helped out by the parking staff.

According to 9News, staff had to unbuckle the passengers to free them and get them to safety.

The roller coaster is a popular attraction in the park and reaches speeds of up to 80 km/h and heights of 32 meters.

In a statement posted on social media, Sea World said guests were “safe at all times” during the attraction.

“This morning, Sea World’s Leviathan experienced an outage due to the activation of a ride sensor,” the message reads.

“Guests were safe throughout the disruption and our team was in constant contact with them.”

“With the help of our team, the guests on board left the journey at the safe stopping zones.

“The safety and well-being of our guests is our highest priority. And the ride disruptions are a testament that the ride systems and operators are doing what they were designed and trained to do to keep our guests safe.”

Leviathan was part of Sea World’s $50 million The New Atlantis complex, which will be built in 2022.

According to Sea World’s website, nearly 200,000 meters of wood were used to build the 909-meter-long wooden roller coaster track.
