Will Jannik Sinner play at the 2024 Cincinnati Open despite injury concerns?

Will Jannik Sinner play at the 2024 Cincinnati Open despite injury concerns?

At the beginning of the year, Jannik Sinner withdrew from the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open due to a hip injury.

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner appeared to be injured when he lost to Russian Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Canadian Open. The ATP world number one played in the tournament as the defending champion. Moreover, in the absence of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, he had a great chance to defend the title.

However, Sinner’s run in Montreal was halted by ten-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev. Rain halted play in Montreal and Rublev, who recently suffered from tonsillitis, scored a resounding 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Sinner.

Nevertheless, the Australian Open winner was plagued by a fitness problem in his right hip throughout the match. During the breaks and changes of ends, Jannik Sinner massaged his hip. His coach Darren Cahill also asked the Italian tennis star to call the physiotherapist onto the court after the second set.

Sinner started this year with a breakthrough campaign in Melbourne, defeating the likes of Andrey Rublev, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev to win his first Grand Slam title. He continued his brilliant form by winning the ATP Rotterdam and Miami Open.

However, at the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters, his hip injury flared up again, which led to his withdrawal from the Madrid Open. Due to the aforementioned injury, he also had to skip the Italian Open. It was revealed that his team wanted to avoid any possibility of the injury becoming chronic. At the French Open, he lost in the semifinals in a five-set marathon to Carlos Alcaraz.

He later won the Halle Open, but was unable to repeat his success at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Sinner lost to Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the grass major. Unfortunately, the injury seems to have flared up again just a few weeks before the US Open.

Sinner also played doubles in Montreal alongside Jack Draper. The duo defeated Belgians Sander Gille and Joran Vilegan in the first round to claim their first doubles victory. In the second round, they surprised Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev to secure a place in the quarterfinals. However, the duo have also withdrawn from the doubles event.

Jannik Sinner is seeded first for the 2024 Cincinnati Masters, where, if he stays fit, he will have a good opportunity to get in shape before the US Open. So far, the ATP world number one has not made an official statement.
