The BBC has paid tribute to Jude Tindall, the beloved creator of the Sister Boniface Mysteries, following her death.

The author was also involved in the creation of Shakespeare & Hathaway and wrote on popular series such as Father BrownAccident and doctors.

Tindall’s death occurred a few weeks after filming began on the fourth season of the Father Brown spin-off “Sister Boniface Mysteries.”

A statement from the BBC said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the news of the death of the beloved creator of ‘Sister Boniface’, co-creator of ‘Shakespeare’ and ‘Hathaway’ and master of cozy crime novels, Jude Tindall.”

“Jude was a brilliant writer and wrote countless episodes of Sister Boniface, Father Brown, Casualty, Land Girls and Doctors. Those who had the privilege of working with her know how passionate she was about her shows and how generous she was in nurturing the next generation of writers and producers.

“She will be sadly missed by the BBC Studios drama team and our thoughts are with her family.”

The BBC has also announced that the first series of Sister Boniface Mysteries will air on BBC One this Friday (23 August) and that the first episode will be dedicated to Tindall.

The cozy mystery detective comedy-drama television series premiered on Britbox and UKTV Drama in 2022. Since then, two more seasons have been released, while filming on the fourth season began in July 2024.

The series is set in England in the early 1960s. The protagonist (played by Lorna Watson) is a Catholic nun at St. Vincent’s Convent in the fictional Cotswold town of Great Slaughter. She makes wine and has a PhD in forensic science, which allows her to serve as a scientific advisor to the local police during investigations.

Friends, fans and colleagues paid tribute to the author on social media. Richard Price, who starred in Father Brown, described her as a “wonderful, creative person”.

Another Father Brown actor, John Burton, described her as a “lovely person” who will be “greatly missed.”

One commenter added: “Sad news. Always a pleasure to see her name in the credits.”

Someone else wrote: “I always check who writes the EP and yours have always been a pleasure. Rest in peace Jude.”

The cause of death has not yet been determined at this time.

The thoughts of everyone at Virgin Radio are with Jude’s friends and family.
