During the roll call at the Democratic National Convention, each state and territory enjoyed a special moment in the spotlight on Tuesday night at the United Center in Chicago.

In short speeches that reflected the character of their homeland, the delegations announced their vote for Kamala Harris one after the other.

Lil Jon introduced the delegation from his home state of Georgia. Spike Lee stood next to New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The residents of Wisconsin wore cheeseheads.

The process was led by Jason Rae of Wisconsin, secretary of the Democratic National Committee, who called the names of the candidates for the second time at the Democratic National Convention.

Rae stood at the podium and asked each delegation: “How do you vote?”

Four years ago, Rae called the vote for a virtual convention during the height of the pandemic, which was originally supposed to be held as an in-person event in Milwaukee.

Since 1944, only four other people have served as DNC secretary, which is an honorary role. Rae assumed the position in 2017 and was re-nominated in 2021 with the support of President Joe Biden.

Rae has been an energetic Democrat since his youth. Before he could drive, he rode his bike to county conventions in rural Barron County, Wisconsin. At age 17, he became the youngest candidate elected to the Democratic National Committee in 2004. From 2007 to 2017, he chaired the DNC’s Youth Council.

Today, between convention seasons, he is president and CEO of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, an award-winning organization Rae founded that has over 600 business members. He is also a partner at Nation Consulting, a Milwaukee-based public affairs firm.

He lives in Glendale with his husband Phillip.
