US Open 2024: Dates, schedule, seedings and TV broadcast

Aug 21 (Reuters) – The U.S. Open is a Grand Slam hard-court tennis tournament organized by the United States Tennis Association. It was first held in 1881 and was originally known as the U.S. National Championships.

Here’s what you need to know about the last major of the year:

WHEN WILL THE US OPEN TAKE PLACE?

* This year’s US Open will take place from August 26 to September 8.

WHERE IS THE US OPEN?

* The US Open takes place every year in New York.

* The three main show courts of the US Open are Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and the Grandstand.

* Arthur Ashe Stadium (capacity: 23,771) is named after the only black man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. He was also a prominent human rights activist.

* Louis Armstrong Stadium (capacity: 14,053) was named after jazz great Armstrong, who lived just blocks from the venue until his death in 1971. It opened during the 2018 event, replacing the 1978 stadium of the same name. Like the main stadium, it features a retractable roof.

* The grandstand (capacity: 8,125) opened on August 29, 2016, the opening day of the 2016 US Open.

WHO IS PARTICIPATING IN THE US OPEN?

* The top-ranked players automatically enter the main draw. The 32 seeds will be announced before the draw to ensure they do not meet in the early rounds. The seedings are based on the world rankings, which are determined by the points players earn on the tour.

* Defending champion Novak Djokovic is number two in the men’s world rankings. He has won 24 Grand Slams.

* Local hero Coco Gauff is number three in the women’s world rankings and will defend her New York title, the 20-year-old’s only Grand Slam title to date.

* The organizers also award wildcards to local heroes and well-known players who have fallen behind in the rankings.
