How some Florida cities are helping turn campaign signs into fuel

ORLANDO, Florida. – With the August 20 primary election over, the cities of Orlando and Winter Park are hoping you will help put campaign signs to better use than simply throwing them in the trash.

The League of Women Voters is again opposing a collaboration with Orlando and Winter Park to collect campaign signs and send them to a plant where they will be processed into fuel.

NuCycle Energy in Plant City shreds and compacts paper, polymers, fibers and wood to create Enviro-Fuelcubes that can be used to power power plants or make cement.

According to NuCycle Energy, the cubes are 80% carbon neutral and represent a cleaner alternative to coal. They also have the added benefit of keeping these materials out of landfills.

Since the November 2020 election, cities have been collecting campaign signs and sending them to NuCycle Energy. According to the City of Winter Park, nearly 6 tons of signs were collected for recycling in 2022.

The collection begins on Wednesday and runs until Sunday, September 1st, at the following locations:

ORLANDO:

  • Orlando Solid Waste – 1028 Woods Avenue, Orlando

  • Broadway Methodist Church – 406 E. Amelia Street Orlando

  • First Unitarian Church of Orlando – 1901 East Robinson Street Orlando

WINTER PARK:

  • Cady Way Pool at 2529 Cady Way

  • Mead Botanical Garden Community Garden at 1310 South Denning Drive
