Co-directed by Natalie Rae and Angela Patton, Daughters was a huge success at the Sundance Film Festival – and the reason for this is immediately clear.

In the film, we meet Aubrey, Santana, Raziah and Ja’Ana – girls of different ages who have very different feelings about their relationships with their fathers and the upcoming dance – which will take place in a prison in Washington, DC.

The men are preparing to invite their daughters to sessions with a “father life coach” to prepare them for the emotional journey ahead.

While Daughters is a necessary and urgent theme that deals with family ties, loss and growing up. Viewers will find it hard to hold back the tears.

It focuses on the effects of growing up without a father figure, and although the film is emotional, you can’t look away.

According to Radio Times, Patton said of her documentary: “I would recommend you have a candle, tissues and water and just breathe.”

“Take breaks if you need to, but we want you to finish reading it and then I want you to share it with someone else.”

And viewers seem to agree, sharing their reactions on social media.

Another said: “All I can say is abolish prisons and find other solutions for penance because this shouldn’t be happening. So heartwarming and heartbreaking.”

A third added: “You expect a film about a father-daughter dance for men behind bars to be moving, but this film offers more than you expect, a whole lot more. It’s not to be missed.”

And a fourth wrote: “Oh my god that scene in Daughters on Netflix where this man is shown by another man how to tie his tie for the father-daughter dance,” followed by three crying emojis.

Critics also reacted positively to Daughters as the film has a perfect critics score of 100 percent on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

John Serba reflected on the statistics highlighted for Decider: “It’s hard to argue with the message of Daughters – it ends with a title card that says 95 percent of incarcerated men who participate in the father-daughter dance do not return to prison.”

And journalist Wendy Ide wrote for The Guardian: “Barely a minute into this poignant documentary, I was left breathless.”

And Janet Leigh of Digital Spy said that viewers “will be deeply saddened when watching this sensitive documentary about black fathers reconnecting with their daughters – because that’s really what it’s about.”

Daughters is now streaming on Netflix.
