STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy is fed up with the distractions that come with this new era of college football.

There’s so much to keep in mind these days with the transfer portal and name, image and likeness deals, and Gundy has drawn the line.

“I told the players that there are no more negotiations now,” he said. “The portal is over. All negotiations are history. Now we play football. We only train and play football.”

Gundy has turned his focus to the opening game at home on August 31 against South Dakota State.

“The business side of what we’re doing now is we have to have these conversations with them,” he said. “Tell your agent to stop calling us and asking for more money. This is non-negotiable now. Start again in December.”

Gundy should be looking forward to football. Led by running back Ollie Gordon II, the Cowboys start the season ranked 17th in the AP Top 25.

Gordon won the Doak Walker Award last season as the nation’s top running back and is the Big 12’s preseason best offensive player. He could have left, but he chose to stay and play for a team that has plenty of returning talent.

Moss named Southern Cal’s starting quarterback

LOS ANGELES – Miller Moss has been named the starting quarterback at No. 23 Southern California, succeeding Caleb Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Moss, a redshirt junior from Los Angeles, competed in training camp with UNLV transfer Jayden Maiava to succeed Williams, who is now a starter for the Chicago Bears.

Moss was the frontrunner after his strong performance in the Holiday Bowl. With Williams sidelined to focus on the NFL draft, Moss threw for 372 yards and a Pac-12 bowl-record six touchdowns with one interception in a 42-28 win over Louisville and was named offensive MVP.

Moss was part of USC’s 2021 recruiting class, the last under coach Clay Helton. Moss stayed with the Trojans despite the signing of another more promising quarterback prospect, Jaxson Dart. When Lincoln Riley replaced Helton and brought Williams in from Oklahoma, Moss stayed at USC and served as the backup for the last two seasons.

Moss has thrown for 914 yards and nine touchdowns with one interception in 12 career games. At 6’2″ and 200 pounds, Moss is more of a pocket passer in Riley’s spread offense, which traditionally favors mobile quarterbacks who can contribute to the running game.

USC will face No. 13 LSU in its season opener in Las Vegas on Sept. 1.

Furman honors Stanfield with sticker

GREENVILLE, SC — Furman football helmets this season will include a decal in memory of the late Paladins defensive lineman Bryce Stanfield.

Furman coach Clay Hendrix announced the “Stanfield Strong” logo on Monday in honor of the player who died on Feb. 9, two days after collapsing during practice at the school’s stadium.

Two weeks later, Furman announced that Stanfield’s cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, which had nothing to do with football.

Stanfield, 21, from Acworth, Georgia, played 34 games in three seasons. He had 49 tackles and seven sacks in his career.
