Driver in McDonald’s accident on Boston Road was driving too fast without headlights on

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (WGGB/WSHM) — Two people were hospitalized after a car rolled over and struck a McDonald’s restaurant in Springfield, causing major damage to the building and other vehicles.

Western Mass News spoke to Becillo Rivera, who witnessed the whole thing.

“I was parked at McDonald’s when I heard a loud bang. Then I looked to the side and saw a car flipping over at extreme speed. I tried to move my van, but the car still hit me from behind and flew into the McDonald’s.”

Springfield police confirmed Monday that an adult male driver was traveling eastbound on Boston Road without headlights on Saturday night. The driver struck a car pulling out of a parking lot, police said. The car that caused the crash then struck a fire hydrant and a curb, rolled over in another parking lot, struck two parked cars and finally crashed into the restaurant.

Rivera told us that the driver of the blue car rammed several vehicles before colliding with his.

Many vehicles were affected. First two cars were damaged and then mine was the last one to be hit. It was a very ugly accident, very serious. Thank God no one was seriously injured,” he said.

Rivera told us that after the accident, some of the lights on the front and back of his van were broken.

“I am, as I said, still very affected, but thank God I am still OK and well, we will see what happens after this process,” he explained.

Springfield Fire Department officials reported two people were injured, one person in the car and a guest; both were taken to Baystate Medical Center.

According to the Springfield Fire Department, the two people who were hospitalized suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Springfield Police told us that charges will be filed against the driver. However, the accident is still under investigation, so it is not yet known whether or not the driver will face charges.
