Woman tries to hit her victim and leads police on chase with child in car

A 23-year-old Sumter woman is accused of attempting to run over a victim with her car, which contained a child, following a domestic violence incident on Saturday.

Officials with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said a deputy saw the vehicle driven by Imani Stephens nearly hit a victim near Highways 378 and 261 shortly after 1 a.m. on August 17.

When the victim saw the deputy, he ran to get help.

Stephens is accused of driving her vehicle in front of the deputy’s patrol car before getting out, SCSO officials say.

The officer ordered Stephens to return to her vehicle, and as she attempted to drive away, she rammed the officer’s car.

Another officer attempted to stop Stephens before she drove to a nearby home.

She took the child into the house and locked the door.

Officials said Stephens resisted arrest when additional officers arrived before he himself was arrested.

“We are very relieved that neither the child nor the victim were injured and the suspect has been arrested,” said Sheriff Anthony Dennis. “Such reckless disregard for life – especially when a small child is present – is unthinkable.”

Stephens is accused of aggravated assault, endangering a child, ignoring a blue light, resisting arrest, driving without insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle.

She is being held at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center on $50,000 bail pending trial.
