Surveillance video shows the moment a car crashed into a Salem restaurant – Boston News, Weather, Sports

SALEM, MASS. (WHDH) – A newly released surveillance video shows the moment a car crashed into a Salem restaurant last week.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Friday at Sidelines Sports Bar and Grill on Canal Street. Salem police said the 47-year-old driver and her 45-year-old passenger were both taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A local building inspector found that the restaurant had suffered severe structural damage.

On Friday afternoon, workers were patching the hole in the side of Sidelines’ dining room following the accident.

A video now made available to 7NEWS shows the car crashing through the wall, sending chairs, glass and other debris flying through the restaurant. The video shows the car then crashing into the Sidelines bar.

Although no one was in the restaurant at the time of the accident, several people can be seen coming to the aid of the driver and her passenger after their car came to a stop.

Salem police said investigators believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel immediately before the crash. Although the driver was not named, police said she was charged with negligent conduct and a violation of lane markings.

Sidelines owner Adam Drohan said Friday he was grateful that the injuries in this accident were not more serious.

After the dust settled, Drohan said Monday he expected Sidelines to remain closed for at least a few weeks due to the damage.
