In 2022, The Gaslight Anthem announced their intention to reunite and release an album to mark the end of their hiatus that began in 2015. True to their plan, they released History books on October 27, 2023, their first new record in nine years, and later a four-track companion EP to further illustrate their comeback. This summer, the band has supported their latest work on tour, an effort that continued last night at Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway with additional help from LP collaborator and New York bassist Karina Rykman.
Although the name of the tour serves as a reference to their latest album, the concert on Sunday evening featured several of the band’s albums. History booksThe Gaslight Anthem rolled through the exits of The ’59 Sound, Handwritten, American Slang, Sing or Swim And Get hurtAfter recording their fan favorite “Here’s Looking at You, Kid,” Rykman helped with Billie Eilish’s original “Ocean Eyes,” which was also included on the band’s album. History books LP with the help of Rykman.
Rykman stayed and helped her hosts with follow-up tracks “Mae” and “Great Expectations,” as well as “The ’59 Sound” and the final offering of the evening, a cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The latter also featured Pinkshift helping out with a collective shred of the ’90s grunge favorite.
