Cross-party MPs warn UN against ‘rampant anti-Israel bias’

Cross-party MPs warn UN against ‘rampant anti-Israel bias’

FIRST ON FOX: A bipartisan group of House Democrats is taking steps to protect Israel from potential political turmoil at the United Nations.

A bill introduced by Reps. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) and Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) would block funding for UN agencies that seek to limit Israel’s involvement in global affairs.

“With anti-Israel bias rampant at the United Nations, it is more important than ever that we confront this disgusting hypocrisy and stand shoulder to shoulder with our closest ally,” Lawler told Fox News Digital. “We should not give a penny to any UN agency that demeans Israel’s status.”

Moskowitz said: “The United Nations proved itself biased and virtually useless after Hamas murdered over a thousand innocent Israelis, but demanded a ridiculous, anti-Semitic double standard from Israel when it exercised its right to self-defense.”

The Jewish Democrat from Florida called on the UN to use its influence to put pressure on Hamas to agree to a ceasefire agreement.

The new law comes a month after the United Nations’ top court issued a non-binding opinion urging Israel to immediately halt settlement construction in the West Bank.

The UN is also increasingly raising the alarm about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip in light of Israel’s military response to Hamas’s surprise attack on October 7 last year.

The United States largely supported Israel during the conflict. In April, the United States vetoed a draft resolution that proposed granting full UN membership status to a Palestinian state.

Lawler and Moskowitz’s bill would stop funding the UN or any related agency “that excludes, downgrades, or suspends Israel’s membership or otherwise restricts participation in such a way that Israel can no longer participate fully and on an equal basis with 15 other United Nations member states or the relevant fund, program, specialized agency, or other related entity,” according to the bill text, obtained by Fox News Digital.

The bill is sponsored by two other Democrats and 21 Republicans in the House. Both Democratic co-sponsors, Reps. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio) and Josh Gottheimer (DN.Y.), are Jewish.

The proposal was introduced just as the Democrats were opening their presidential nominating convention in Chicago, where violent anti-Israel protests had already broken out.

Protesters marched through the streets of Chicago, calling Vice President Kamala Harris a “murderer” and demanding a change in policy regarding Gaza.

Some on the left were outraged when the national party released a platform that did not call for an arms embargo on Israel. A group of delegates in Chicago calling themselves Delegates Against Genocide are planning to protest the decision, according to The Times of Israel.
