Democrats use the momentum of Biden and Harris’ move to the National Convention

The Democratic Party Convention, which begins on Monday (August 19), will make history by nominating the vice president Kamala Harris for the presidency, just one month after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign. The convention, which will take place at the United Center in Chicago, will provide Harris with her biggest platform yet to present her arguments to voters.

Harris quickly unified the party and secured the nomination despite not running in a primary as a front-runner. Since then, her campaign has statistically tied or narrowly led Donald Trump in national and competitive polls. The convention will seek to continue that momentum, with Harris’ optimistic personality and core message of “freedom and opportunity” taking center stage.

The convention will also provide Harris with an opportunity to lay out her vision for her presidency. While she has already begun laying out economic proposals focused on lowering the costs of rent, housing, groceries, child care and prescription drugs, many expect more detailed policy plans.

Speeches will be given at the convention by senior party members, including former presidents. Harris’ running mate, the governor of Minnesota Tim Walzwill accept his nomination on Wednesday and Harris will headline the final night of the convention.

The convention is designed to align the base with appealing to independent and easily persuaded voters who often make the difference in the election. For Harris, the convention is an important opportunity to solidify support among Democratic-leaning groups and win over undecided voters.
