DeWitt neighbors react to Rite Aid’s last days of opening in the neighborhood

  • Rite Aid in DeWitt has been around for over 40 years, a place some neighbors call a second home.
  • Now Rite Aid stores in Michigan are being closed to reduce the company’s debt.
  • In the video, customers see their thoughts on the store closure and what they will miss most.

(The following is a transcript of the entire broadcast)

It’s a business that has been part of the DeWitt community for more than 40 years. I’m your neighborhood reporter Russell Shellberg here in DeWitt, talking with neighbors about the memories they’ll take with them as the business reaches its final days.

“It seems like all the good places are closing,” Brown said.

For neighbors like Ginny Brown, this simple Rite Aid supermarket was like a second home.

“It’s just been a staple here since we got here in 1983,” Brown said.

But that will soon change. In Michigan, Rite Aid stores are closing to reduce the company’s debt.

This is tough news for this community that has relied on the store for last-minute shopping, treats and sweets, and even life lessons for neighborhood children.

“When I think about it, this was their first independence — after middle school, after all. They would bring their allowance here, get chips and candy and share them with friends. So it was kind of a transition to independence. And the kids loved it, so it’s going to be very sad,” said resident Autumn Norris.

DeWitt Rite Aid’s last day is August 27, so neighbors have plenty of time to grab last-minute sale items and say goodbye to the store for good.
