Bureau of Energy Efficiency calls on Kerala to implement Mission LiFE to build climate resilience

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Union Ministry of Power, has asked the Kerala government to implement Mission LiFE – short for Lifestyle for Environment – to improve environmental sustainability and promote an environmentally conscious lifestyle.

The initiative aims to align long-term economic growth with India’s climate goals, creating a win-win situation for the public and the country, the BEE said in a statement. The BEE described Mission LiFE, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, as a “transformative approach to environmental protection.”

Deputy Chief Secretary (Energy) KR Jyothilal, Energy Management Centre (EMC) Director R Harikumar and Johnson Daniel, Division Head of Demand Side Management at EMC, recently held discussions with A Chandrashekhar Reddy, BEE’s Media Advisor for Southern States and Union Territories. Mr Jyothilal pointed out that Kerala has set a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and 100% renewable energy dependence by 2040. Since natural forest cover plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration, Kerala also plans to expand forest cover by another 10,000 hectares through social forestry initiatives.

The aim of the mission is to promote conscious consumption and a circular economy with the aim of leaving a throwaway culture behind.

It encourages individuals to adopt climate-positive behaviors and create a supportive ecosystem that enables environmentally friendly and self-sustaining practices.
