PIF turns to £21m Fenerbahce star as second alternative in view of Marc Guehi stalemate

Newcastle are reportedly interested in Fenerbahce star Jayden Oosterwolde and are searching the market for an alternative to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Newcastle’s priority is to sign a new centre-back this summer and Guehi has emerged as their top target after shining for England at Euro 2024.

The centre-back has a contract until 2026, allowing Crystal Palace to demand a hefty fee for their prized player. It is widely reported that they want around £65 million.

Earlier this week it was said Newcastle are “on the verge of a breakthrough” after making a fourth bid for Guehi, which could see the club “eclipse their £63m deal for Alexander Isak”.

A report by the I says Newcastle had a “record offer rejected” and were forced to “weigh up their options”.

While Newcastle have been “exploring alternatives” this week, the report says they could agree a “compromise” with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

“Newcastle United are reviewing their transfer options while Crystal Palace are sticking to their £65million upfront payment for England defender Marc Guehi.

“A fourth offer – which I understand would have been a record deal for the Magpies – was made to Guehi by Newcastle in the last 24 hours, but sources say it was rejected.

“Newcastle have been looking for alternatives this week – both Premier League centre-backs and foreign players – and could now turn their attention to other targets. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah is said to be one such alternative.

“However, it is assumed that they have not yet broken off talks, which suggests that a compromise may still be found.”

And now a report from Turkey says Oosterwolde is another alternative that Newcastle is considering.

The 23-year-old broke into Fenerbahce’s starting eleven last season after joining from Parma for £4.5 million in January 2023, scoring two goals in 43 appearances in all competitions, operating as both a centre-back and left-back.

Newcastle have reportedly asked Fenerbahce for permission to start talks with the Dutchman, who has played the full 90 minutes in both of Jose Mourinho’s Süper Lig games so far this season.

The report claims Fenerbahce want £21 million for Oosterwolde, whose contract runs until 2027. Ideally, however, they would like to keep the versatile defender, especially as they also face the departure of Ferdi Kadlioglu, who is close to a move to Brighton in the summer.

When asked about the interest in him this summer and Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish’s claim that they would need to make “superstar money” to lure him away, Guehi says he is perfectly happy to stay at Selhurst Park.

“I’m (happy). It’s nice to be back here, to play with teammates again and to play in front of some fans again (in preseason), so everything is positive,” Guehi told Sky Sports.

“It fills me with honour (comments Parrish) – for him to say something like that is unbelievable for someone like me who plays an important role in this football club.

“I’m not sure if I’m a superstar, but those were really nice words from the chairman.”

Guehi added: “There’s a real culture of togetherness here, both in the academy and among the women (and men) – everyone is really on the same wavelength, a real family. It’s an incredible place.”

“It’s always important to focus on what’s really important and that’s the game this weekend. Then we have to make sure we stay in it for the rest of the season.”
