You know the guy. Spiky, frosty curls, a unique goatee and an authority on good food that can be found across the country. We’re talking about Guy Fieri, host of the popular Food Network show Diners, drive-ins and pubs.
From hip highway hotspots to hidden gems on back roads, Fieri embarks on the ultimate foodie road trip, visiting some of America’s best and most classic restaurants, diners, drive-ins and dive bars serving good old-fashioned fare and twists on timeless classics.
Fieri has visited more than 1,250 restaurants across the country since the show first aired in 2007, including several stops here in Michigan. The chef has driven around the Mitten State in his iconic red car and stopped at over a dozen Michigan restaurants, but one in particular stands out.
Recently Mashedthe cross-platform publication for anyone who enjoys food and cooking has compiled a list of the “best diners, drive-ins and dive bars in every state.” According to Mashed, Michigan is all about BBQ.
It was episode 3 of season 13 in 2011 that brought Guy Fieri to Clarkston, Michigan, thanks to his buddy Kid Rock. Fieri was introduced to both the Union Woodshop and Clarkston Union. Both have heavenly dishes, but Mashed recommends heading to the Union Woodshop for a true culinary paradise.
“Be sure to try ‘The Porker,’ which is topped with a freshly ground pork patty, house-cured Michigan maple bacon, house-cured hot link, pickled chilies, Woodshop cold smoked cheddar cheese, and something called South Carolina Mayo,” they wrote.
They also recommend saving some room for dessert and treating yourself to the famous Maple Bourbon Sundae, which consists of a Jim Beam sauce poured over homemade ice cream infused with liquid nitrogen.
