I can’t stop thinking about painting my kitchen ceiling after seeing this dramatic transformation

I’m obsessed with colorful kitchens – I’m fascinated by the idea of drenching a room in color and flooding it (especially the ceilings!) with a single hue. When I see a room with a painted ceiling, I’m instantly blown away. That’s exactly what happened when I saw the kitchen in Katie DeGroot’s neo-Gothic home.

Unlike other homes that continue the monochrome theme throughout a room, DeGroot’s kitchen is unique because only the ceiling is painted. And it’s not just any color—it’s a dark, dramatic black, while the walls are bright white. It turns out that painting a kitchen black is a popular design trend of 2024, and for good reason (I mean, look at the dramatic cabinets in this kitchen!).

It’s arguable that painting a kitchen black – especially the ceiling – makes it look smaller than it is. But I think DeGroot’s house is a great example of how the bold color encourages guests to look up, emphasizing the height of the room. Plus, there’s something so cozy and atmospheric about the dark ceiling that I just want to snuggle up under.

The black ceiling also works harmoniously with other black accents throughout the room, such as the hanging cast iron skillets, the dark painting above the stove, the radiator and the striking dark grey countertops. I appreciate small but bold choices that have a lot of design glory and this ceiling is a fantastic example of how to achieve that goal. It’s striking but subtle at the same time because it doesn’t seem overbearing like painting all the walls the same colour (black or not).

Since moving into the home in 2019, DeGroot has “updated the colors and transformed it from a themed museum into an elegant family home.” This isn’t the only space with unique charm and flair. To see more, check out the full house tour on Apartment Therapy.
