Signs of child abuse to look out for

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Going back to school makes it important to look out for one another. You never know what could happen in someone’s life. It’s important to recognize not only the physical signs of abuse, but the emotional ones as well.

“Some warning signs that something is wrong at home or in their life are changes in their personality, like a major change in their personality, maybe a deterioration in their physical health or poor hygiene, they are more tired than they are, they may be eating less or more, so a change in their eating habits,” said Abby Pifer, forensic interviewer at North Star Child Advocacy.

Abuse is not something you talk about easily. We recommend that you find at least five trusted adults you feel comfortable talking to, and that goes for anything, not just abuse.

“We always tell kids they should have at least five trusted adults in their lives, so if they can’t find five, then at least two, one at home and one outside. You can also have a trusted friend; that’s great, but you and your trusted friend also need to find a trusted adult to talk to and tell things to,” Pifer said.

North Star also has backpacks and school supplies on site. If you need them, feel free to stop by and pick one up!
