Paris issues second-highest storm warning for day 4 of Olympic Games

As the Olympic Games are taking place in the city, a severe weather warning was issued for the greater Paris region on Tuesday; heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, hail and lightning are forecast from 6 p.m., the French weather service said.

The French meteorological service issued a severe storm warning for Paris and its surrounding suburbs on Tuesday as the city hosts the Olympic Games.

From 6 p.m. (16:00 GMT), severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail and lightning are likely over the French capital, the weather service said in a bulletin.

This could be accompanied by “intense rainfall (about 20 to 40 mm in less than an hour)”, with the effects being localized and lasting until about midnight, the service said.

The storm warning came as the heat in Paris swelters at 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) on the fourth day of the Games, with temperatures forecast to rise on Tuesday.

The scorching temperatures will be felt particularly acutely by the Olympians during the outdoor competitions, including beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower and the women’s rugby semifinals at the Stade de France.
