One of the politically focused YouTubers I’ve been following regularly lately is Jesse Dollemore with his Dollemore Daily videos. I find him to be an effective and humorous host, and he often offers interesting insights into the political issues of the day. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as emotional and angry as he was yesterday when he talked about Trump’s “degrading” comments about Medal of Honor recipients – that the Medal of Freedom is better than the Medal of Honor because Medal of Honor recipients are “in bad shape or dead.” Look, Dollemore served in the United States Marine Corps for many years, and he is NOT putting up with any of Trump’s bullshit.
Dollemore never saw combat. However, he dislocated his hip and knee during an exercise and almost had to have his leg amputated at the hip because the blood stopped flowing back to the hip socket. So he is a disabled veteran and has, as he describes it, a “funny walk.” He notes, however, that his injury is “nowhere near the level of a Medal of Honor.”
Dollemore mentions some of the many horrible things Trump has said about military members and veterans in the past, and says Trump’s “disgusting” remarks this week about Medal of Honor recipients exceeded even those horrific remarks.
“It was easy a slap in the face to every veteran, honorary or not, who … understands the sacrifice that was made.”
In an incredibly emotional moment, Dollemore compares Trump’s statement that he awarded the Medal of Freedom to billionaire Miriam Adelson because she was “beautiful and healthy” to the moment President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Kyle Carpenter. Carpenter, 21, was serving in Afghanistan and was standing under a roof where the Taliban threw a grenade, and he stepped between the grenade and his fellow soldier to save his life.
Carpenter was in a coma for five weeks and spent 2.5 years in the hospital recovering. He underwent brain surgery to remove shrapnel from his head; he underwent nearly 40 surgeries to repair a collapsed lung, broken fingers, and a shattered right arm with more than 30 fractures; and he underwent several skin grafts. He received a new artificial eye, jaw, and teeth.
“That’s why he’s being awarded the Medal of Honor,” says Dollemore. “Not because he donated $100 million to re-elect Donald Trump.”
“The Medal of Honor is such a high award that when a private, the lowest rank in the military, receives the Medal of Honor, the highest rank must salute the award.”
Dollemore goes through the list of people to whom Donald Trump has awarded the Medal of Freedom. They are mainly athletes, but also people like Antonin Scalia, Rush Limbaugh, Orrin Hatch, Devin Nunes and Jim Jordan. “In the eyes and mind of Donald Trump, they are equal to Corporal Kyle Carpenter.”
He ends with a righteous tirade:
“If you’re a Republican and you’re still behind this, fuck off. You’re a liar and a hypocrite. You don’t support the troops. You don’t give a damn about the sacrifice of the hundreds of Medal of Honor recipients. You don’t care. What matters to you is Trump and the glorification of the beloved leader above everything else that you have claimed for decades really matters to you.”
