The southbound 71 Freeway in Chino and Chino Hills will be closed beginning Friday evening and lasting the entire weekend.
The Riverside County Transportation Commission said the closure is part of a $134 million project to redesign the intersection between the eastbound 91 Freeway and the northbound 71 Freeway.
“This will smooth out the existing hook ramp and hopefully allow traffic to flow faster and more safely across the 71/91 intersection,” said David Knudsen, deputy general manager of the RCTC.
The current ramp is outdated and causes traffic congestion on the highway. The new overpass is intended to alleviate this problem.
The weekend closure will affect the southbound 71 Freeway at Butterfield Ranch Road and Euclid Avenue to the 91 Freeway.

It starts on Friday at 10pm and lasts until Monday at 5am.
A northbound detour is in place via Euclid Avenue and Sr-83 to Freeway 60.
The 71 Freeway has been hampered by closures in Pomona for the past few months. The Rio Rancho Road closure will continue on Monday, August 19, according to Caltrans. Monday through Friday, the Rio Rancho Road ramp to eastbound SR-60 and subsequent roads will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
