Man arrested in connection with online threats against British Prime Minister

A man has been arrested in connection with online threats against Taoiseach Simon Harris.

Gardaí, investigating online threats against the Taoiseach, made the arrest this morning.

The man, in his 40s, is being questioned at a Garda station in the north-west.

It is believed the online threats against Mr Harris and his family remained online for at least two days after Gardaí asked Instagram owner Meta to remove them.

Separately, the Gardaí are also investigating several other threats made against Mr Harris since he took office as Irish Taoiseach.

A man was arrested on Friday in connection with a Bomb threat in Mr Harris’s house.

He has now been released and the file is being prepared for the Attorney General.

The threat was made by calling the Samaritans Helpline on Wednesday 26 June at around 6pm.

The caller gave a code word that led to Gardaí immediately conduct searches on the property.

No devices were found.

In the meantime, masked men gathered in front of his house on two separate occasions earlier this summer in protest against Irish immigration policy.

The Gardaí are apparently concerned about the threats – and have advised the Taoiseach to His family moves to Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park.

It is believed that they believe that the residence, which was acquired by the state in 1999, is easier to protect.

On Tuesday, the Taoiseach said he would not allow anything to stop him from doing his job.

“There must be no place where someone can hide who wants to threaten, attack or harm people or incite others to do so,” he said.

“Politicians have been regularly targeted and it has almost reached the point where it is seen as acceptable or a normal part of the job.

“This is not acceptable. I get up every day and go to work and work as hard as I can – so do most politicians I know, regardless of party or affiliation.”

Mr Harris also praised An Garda Síochána, who “make us proud every day with the work they do”, and thanked the Irish people “for their kindness and decency – that means the world to me and my family”.
