Expansion at Burke County Company to create jobs

The Office of Governor Roy Cooper, in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Commerce, announced the award of a building reuse grant to MillerKnoll Inc. to support a significant expansion of its manufacturing facility in Hildebran.

MillerKnoll has announced plans for a major expansion of its existing facility. The project was made possible by a substantial state grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce. According to a press release from Burke Development Incorporated (BDI), this expansion underscores MillerKnoll’s unwavering commitment to growth and innovation in Burke County.

The expansion project includes a comprehensive redesign of the production floor, expansion of restroom facilities and installation of new equipment to support additional production lines. Upgrades to the electrical distribution, compressed air systems, sprinkler systems and plumbing infrastructure will also be implemented. These improvements will strengthen MillerKnoll’s capabilities for new product development and insourcing efforts in a fast-growing and lucrative market segment.

The expansion will add two new production lines to the facility, increasing production capacity by 25% and creating 47 new jobs. The project represents a $1,008,000 investment in modernizing the facility. The expansion will provide job opportunities in technical, engineering and manufacturing.

Burke County, the grant applicant, and the City of Hildebran will contribute a 5% local match to support this initiative (this is subject to approval by the Burke County Board of Commissioners at its August 20 meeting). The grant will enable MillerKnoll to expand its manufacturing capabilities, integrate advanced technologies and improve operational efficiencies.

MillerKnoll Inc., a leading designer and manufacturer of office furniture and related products, serves a variety of markets including healthcare, higher education, corporate offices and residential through its Hildebran facility. Since combining two facilities to form the current Hildebran location in 2011, the facility has experienced significant growth and remains a key driver of MillerKnoll’s business.
