Key findings and what we know so far

Notre Dame’s defense is expected to remain the backbone of the program

As we approach the halfway point of Notre Dame’s 2024 fall practice, what do we think we know about this team heading into a pivotal year for Marcus Freeman and the Irish as a whole? If there’s one surefire consensus among everyone who knows the team, it’s that Al Golden’s third-string defense at Notre Dame should be his best.

This unit can easily deploy and redeploy players in the first two levels of defense and is beginning to develop the same ability in the second level of defense as well. Notre Dame’s defense will once again be the strength of the team and put them in a position to be in every game.

Notre Dame offensive wants to take the next step in 2024

The Irish offense isn’t as solid and proven as the defense. There are just too many new and moving pieces that need to be put together to achieve that level of confidence at this point, but there are more than a few strong points to lean on.

First, new OC Mike Denbrock takes over the offense with a ton of experience and expertise in matchup making. This will certainly help Notre Dame’s offense become more explosive and harder to defend.

In terms of personnel, quarterback Riley Leonard’s dual-threat abilities and unique size pose a greater threat to opposing defenses than Notre Dame has been able to at the quarterback position recently.

Additionally, the Irish love their running back room and tight ends. These positions are well-staffed and are expected to see big success in 2024. If the offensive line holds up and the revamped receiver room delivers the results hoped for, Notre Dame’s offense could take off this year.
