Nuttall uses his power as mayor to delay decision on sports fields

The decision was taken “to allow for public consultation and to resubmit it to the Council later in the autumn”.

The City of Barrie posted the following on its website regarding the Sea Cadets Parade Grounds and Multi-Purpose Sports Field.

Mayor Alex Nuttall issued Mayoral Directive MDIR002-24 directing staff to pause consideration of Council Motion 24-G-111 to allow for public consultation, which will be resubmitted to Council in the fall.

On May 15, 2024, Barrie City Council approved a request to construct a parade ground for the Midshipmen and a multi-purpose youth sports field at Allandale Station Park, east of Military Heritage Park. An exact location was announced on June 18, 2024.

A new Sea Cadets Parade Ground for parade ground events and a multi-use field provide opportunities for enhanced use of the waterfront for residents, visitors and for City and Community event planning. Adoption of this motion supports Council’s strategic priority of creating and fostering thriving communities: creating programs and opportunities to support community wellbeing and expanding and maximizing access to parks and recreation opportunities in the City.

The project includes a 600sqm addition to the General John Hayter Southshore Community Centre to house the Sea Cadets. The Sea Cadets have long been housed near the Spirit Catcher, and finding an alternative location for them due to safety concerns has been before Barrie City Council for many years. This move ensures the Cadets have a suitable waterfront location to ensure the safety of the children and youth participating in their programs. It is also consistent with Barrie’s Waterfront Strategic Plan, which was updated in 2023.
