Spock’s Star Trek resurrection would not have lasted without Saavik

Spock (Leonard Nimoy) was revived from the Genesis planet in Star Trek III: The Search for SpockBut The Vulcan’s miraculous comeback would have been short-lived if it weren’t for Lieutenant Saavik (Robin Curtis). Star Trek III was the directorial debut of Leonard Nimoy, who portrayed the heroic death of Spock in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Star Trek III also marks the debut of Robin Curtis as Saavik, after Kirstie Alley did not return to play Spock’s Vulcan protégé.

After Spock sacrificed himself to save the USS Enterprise, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khanhis body was placed in a photon torpedo tube and fired towards the newly emerging Genesis planet, which had just been created by the destruction of the Genesis device by Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban). Spock’s makeshift coffin landed safely on the Genesis planet and the Vulcan was revived by Genesis’ life-giving energies from his childhood. Lt. Saavik and David Marcus (Merritt Butrick) discovered that Spock was alive as they explored the Genesis planet and all were confronted with the misfortune of the self-destructing world and the Klingons led by Kruge (Christopher Lloyd).

Kirk, McCoy, Saavik and the entire crew of the starship Enterprise worked together to bring Spock back, although he did not fully return to his Vulcan self until Star Trek: IV – Journey into Spacee. Meanwhile, David Marcus was killed by Kruge, but Kirk’s son also deserves credit for heroically protecting Spock. Before Spock’s friends could rescue him from the Genesis planet, however, It was Lt. Saavik who lovingly and sensitively cared for the suffering Spock and helped him survive pon farr In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Without Saavik, Spock would not have made it away from Genesis.
