What are today’s Connections answers?

Here are the full answers to today’s Connections puzzle for Friday, August 16:

  • Uh: Average, Mediocre, OK, So-so
  • Abbreviations of US states: Hello, Ma, Or, Pa
  • Types of boots: Ankle, cowboy, go-go, overknee
  • Things that go up and down: Elevator, sun, tide, yo-yo

Of course, my first instinct on today’s Connections was to target the hyphenated words. “Yo-yo,” “So-so,” “Go-go,” and “Thigh-high” stick out like a sore thumb among the other words. Unfortunately, it’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last, that Connections has fooled me like a cunning sphinx. I should have known I was on the wrong track when I successfully found the “Shoes” category.

When I looked at current fashion trends, I immediately thought of cowboy boots when I saw the word “cowboy,” and when I saw “ankle,” my suspicion that there was a shoe group somewhere was confirmed. However, I couldn’t classify “thigh high” into two categories. At some point I was at a loss and gave up, which was probably for the best, because there was no way I could have defined “things that go up and down” as a category. That seems complicated even by Connections standards.

Congratulations if you got today’s Connections answer right, with or without the help of our handy tips above! And if you didn’t succeed today, don’t worry – a new Connections puzzle is released every day at midnight, so you can try again tomorrow, just like Wordle.

What is Connections?

Connections is one of the most popular daily puzzle games from the New York Times (owner of Wordle). The goal of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, with each group of four words sharing a common theme.

For example, the words “hook,” “nana,” “Peter,” and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or, to give another example, “action,” “ballpark,” “go,” and “stick” are all words that usually come right before the word “figure.”

Your task is to find out which topics the different words connect. But be careful, because often false connections are deliberately made to mislead you! To win the game, you must find all four connections without making four mistakes. If you make a fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is automatically displayed.

Each of the four groups in the Connections puzzle of the day is also given a different color that indicates how easy or difficult the connection is to find. These colors are: yellow (easiest), green (easy), blue (moderately difficult) and purple (most difficult).
