A remarkable piece of automotive history will be in the spotlight at the 2024 Monterey auction: the 1992 Schuppan Porsche 962CR. This vehicle is not just any supercar; it is one of only two production models ever built, making it one of the rarest Porsches ever. With its stunning black metallic paint and impressive turbocharged 3.4-liter flat-six engine, this 962CR is more than just a showpiece – it is a symbol of the fusion of racing pedigree and street-legal technology.

The story of the Schuppan-Porsche 962CR is closely linked to the legacy of Australian racing legend Vern Schuppan. Having won the 1983 24 Hours of Le Mans driving a Porsche 956, Schuppan was inspired to create a road-going version of Porsche’s dominant race car. Working with Japan’s Art Sports Corporation (ASC), Schuppan set about developing and producing the 962CR, a car that captures the spirit of the racetrack while being drivable on public roads.

The 962CR project was ambitious and 50 examples were planned. However, the economic downturn in Japan in 1992 led to a premature end to production and only seven cars were completed – two prototypes, three 962LM models and two 962CR production cars. The car auctioned in Monterey, chassis number AS 962CR 05/50, is the last example of this limited edition, making it a highly sought-after collector’s item.

This particular Schuppan 962CR was built on a carbon fiber chassis designed by famed British racing designer Reynard, which is two inches wider than the original to provide more interior space. The bodywork, designed by Australian Michael Simcoe, who is now Vice President of Global Design at General Motors, takes inspiration from the legendary Porsche 959, including a full-width rear wing. The car’s twin-turbocharged engine, designed by famed Porsche engineer Hans Mezger, produces an incredible 600 horsepower, propelling the car to a top speed that briefly made it the fastest production car in the world in 1992.

Upon completion, the car was initially scheduled to be delivered to ASC in Japan, but contractual disputes forced it to return to the UK, where it featured in Alain de Cadenet’s television series Victory by Design. Schuppan eventually sold the car to a neighbour, who kept it in his private collection for almost 30 years. In 2006, the car was modified by Group C Ltd. in the UK to receive Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) certification, making it legal to drive on public roads. These modifications included updates to meet current emissions standards, the installation of a Motec engine management system and other adjustments to comply with road traffic regulations.

The Schuppan 962CR on offer in Monterey remains in excellent condition, with meticulous maintenance and preservation ensuring it is as close to its original form as possible. The car has retained its original black-on-black color scheme and features the wider Reynard chassis, making it not only a stunning example of automotive design, but also a piece of motorsport history.

Accompanied by an extensive collection of documentation, including the original sales brochure, a certificate of authenticity and a declaration of provenance from Vern Schuppan himself, this car represents an exceptional opportunity for collectors and Porsche enthusiasts. With its rarity, history and exceptional build quality, the Schuppan-Porsche 962CR is expected to be one of the highlights of the Monterey auction and attract significant attention from bidders worldwide.

This auction is more than just a sale. It’s a chance to own a piece of automotive legend – a car that bridges the gap between the racetrack and the open road and embodies the spirit of one of Porsche’s most iconic racing platforms. When the hammer falls, the lucky new owner will receive not just a car, but a rolling testament to the ingenuity and passion that drives the world of motorsport.
