John Cena says he loves ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ but says ‘it was put on ice for the right reasons’

John Cena was one of many actors involved in the now-defunct Warner Bros. series “Coyote vs. Acme,” and he remains saddened by the show’s fate. Yet he continues to believe in the process that led to that fate.

The film was officially scrapped in November, despite being fully completed and shown to some audiences. The decision sparked intense criticism from fans and those involved in the film. In response, the studio partially reversed the decision and allowed the film to be offered. Ultimately, however, Warner Bros. rejected several offers, as TheWrap exclusively reported in February, and “Coyote vs. Acme” remains unreleased.

Speaking to TheWrap ahead of his new film “Jackpot!” — now streaming on Prime Video — Cena talked about the Hollywood process and how he feels about the decision after all these months.

“There’s a lot to it. And everyone has a different perspective. We don’t own the movie. That’s the hard thing about this business, you have a sense of ownership because you put your heart and soul into it,” he told TheWrap. “And (director) Dave Green and everyone involved made a movie that we thought was good.”

Cena noted that audiences also liked the film, but at the end of the day, it’s “the movie business.” He added that he understands and respects the “business” of dropping the film, even though he believes in the film itself.

“I would have liked to see the film given a chance. But I’m only one person. And if it gets shelved, then I have to assume that it was for the right reasons and that it was a good business decision,” he continued. “I think I would be very regretful and ashamed if I looked back on the legacy of the film and it was shelved for other reasons.”

“So I have to believe in the process,” Cena said. “And I love the film, I’m into it with all my heart, but it’s someone else’s project and you can do whatever you want with it, and that’s what you chose to do.”
